Staten Island Federation of PTAs. Federation is the only organization of its kind in New York City and is comprised of PTA members from all schools on Staten Island.
Staten Island Federation of PTAs was founded in 1927 by a small group of woman who were forced to meet in secret. Their purpose then as it still is now was to "promote better understanding between home and school."
We have been fighting for over 80 years for the rights of our children to have the best possible public education. We have Delegates Assemblies (open to the public) and hear the "outcry" of which you speak.
Our parents generously give their time and energy to improve public education. They travel to Albany, Washington, D.C., Manhattan and many other locations for meetings, rallies, and forums -- whatever it takes to get our point across. Some of our parents have children receive special education services and see how hard they work, along with teachers and administrators, to give our most challenged children a fair chance at a successful education. We protest at City Hall against budget cuts and unfair practices.
Federation's annual Legislative Forum where all of our elected officials have been invited to come and answer our questions about serious educational problems: Overcrowded schools, lack of funds, mayoral control and the constant omission of parental input into Department of Education policies.
Federation annual Scholarship Luncheon recognizes the efforts and accomplishments of our students by providing a scholarship to one child from each public high school with a $2000 scholarship. In addition, one student receiving special education services from public high school system will receive a scholarship. One 8th grade student from each intermediate school receives a calculator and one 5th grade student from each elementary school receives a certificate of recognition and a pin of merit.
